MID-SHIP Alumina/Bauxite – September 2, 2026

September 2, 2026

Market Overview:

The dry bulk market remains broadly firm, with strength extending across most vessel classes. Handysize activity improved across both the Atlantic and Pacific, with the 7TC average gaining $108 to $16,082/day. The US Gulf and South Atlantic remain healthy on balanced tonnage and cargo supply, while the Continent/Mediterranean is gradually firming, and Pacific fixtures are being concluded above previous levels. Supramax conditions were comparatively steady, with the 11TC average gaining $141 to $21,090/day. North America remains the standout region with continued rate improvement, while the Continent is supported by scrap demand. Pacific sentiment is generally positive, particularly in the North Pacific, although Indonesian activity has softened slightly.

Panamax sentiment remains firm in the Pacific, but more mixed in the Atlantic. Strong Australian and Indonesian coal demand continues to support the Pacific, particularly for prompt tonnage, pushing the P5TC up $248 to $22,113/day. Atlantic activity remains relatively busy, although slower cargo replenishment and owners’ preference to keep tonnage within the basin could place some pressure on trans-Atlantic rates. Capesize remains the clear market leader, with the BCI 182 5TC surging another $3,632 to $54,801/day. Heavy miner activity drove C5 rates toward $18.00/MT, while tightening North Atlantic tonnage and strong fronthaul demand continue to support the Atlantic. C3 South Brazil/West Africa-China levels have pushed toward $41.00/MT, reinforcing the strong overall momentum in the larger sizes.
